Homes in the New River Valley go through real seasons — humid summers, wet springs, colorful falls and cold, sometimes icy winters. Each one puts different stresses on your house. The good news is that a little routine attention goes a long way. Small tasks done on time keep water out, keep things working, and keep small problems from turning into expensive ones.
Below is a straightforward, season-by-season checklist you can actually keep up with. None of it requires special skills — and anything you would rather not tackle yourself, we are glad to handle on a single maintenance visit.
Spring
Spring is about recovering from winter and getting ahead of the rainy months. Walk the outside of your home and look for winter damage — loose trim, cracked caulk, or spots where paint has worn thin. Clean out gutters so spring rain drains away from the foundation instead of pooling against it. Check that outdoor faucets work and are not leaking, and give decks and porches a look for any boards that loosened over the winter.
Summer
Summer humidity is hard on exterior wood and paint. This is a good time for pressure washing siding, walkways and decks to clear away mildew before it sets in. Touch up exterior paint on any bare spots so moisture cannot get into the wood. Inside, check that doors and windows still open and close smoothly — humidity can cause swelling and sticking.
Fall
Fall is the most important season for getting ahead of winter. Clean gutters again after the leaves drop. Seal gaps and cracks where cold air — and water — can get in around windows, doors and trim. Check weatherstripping and re-caulk where it has failed. Taking care of these small items now saves you from cold drafts and water problems when the temperature drops.
Winter
Winter is mostly about watching for trouble. Keep an eye out for drafts, ice buildup and any signs of water where it should not be. If something does go wrong in the cold — a broken board, a failed seal, water getting in — do not wait it out. Small winter problems tend to get worse fast, and a quick repair now is far cheaper than the damage that follows.
